Detailing your boat or pontoon before winter storage in Calgary
Boats come off Chestermere Lake and Ghost Lake in fall and sit until spring. Here's what to clean, polish and protect before yours goes into storage.

Why the end of the season is the time to detail
Most boats and pontoons around Calgary come out of the water by mid-October and sit on a trailer or in a storage yard until May. Whatever is on the boat when it gets parked stays there all winter: the waterline scum, bird droppings on the bow, sunscreen and spilled drinks on the vinyl, and a summer of lake film on the hull.
Those deposits don't get easier to remove with time. Waterline stains set deeper into gelcoat, bird droppings etch, and organic residue on seats and carpet is what mildew feeds on. A boat that goes into storage clean and protected is a far simpler job when you're ready to launch again.
What an Alberta winter does to a stored boat
A boat sitting on its trailer in Rocky View County, on an acreage near Cochrane or beside the house in Chestermere still takes weather all winter. Chinooks bring repeated freeze-thaw cycles, so any water left in seat seams, rod lockers or under the deck can freeze and thaw over and over. Snow on a cover pushes moisture down onto the vinyl underneath.
The sun keeps working, too. Calgary gets a lot of bright winter days, and low sun reflecting off snow keeps cooking gelcoat and vinyl that were already dried out by a summer on the water. A cover helps, but a cover pulled over a dirty boat traps grime and moisture against the finish and can rub grit into it every time the wind moves it.
Gelcoat and hull: wash, polish, seal
For a boat in decent shape, a Wash & Wax before storage takes off the season's film and leaves a protective layer on the hull. If the gelcoat has started to chalk or the colour looks flat, wax alone won't fix that. Exterior Polish & Seal takes off the light oxidation first and then seals the surface, which is the right move before a long sit.
For owners who want longer protection, Marine Ceramic Coating goes on after the polish. It keeps water spotting and UV chalking off the hull and makes the spring wash-down much faster. Fall is a good time for it, as long as the work is done before the deep cold sets in.
Pontoon tubes, vinyl and the cabin
Aluminum pontoon tubes pick up a dull, stained film below the waterline over a season. Aluminum Pontoon Acid Restoration strips that film and brings the tubes back to an even finish. It is much easier to do with the boat out of the water and on the trailer, which is exactly where it sits in the fall.
Inside, an Interior Detail cleans and conditions the vinyl seating and cleans the carpet and storage areas, so you aren't locking sunscreen, food crumbs and damp gear in for the winter. If your boat fights mildew every year, Interior Seat Ceramic Coating seals the vinyl so it has a harder time taking hold. Full Interior + Exterior covers both sides in one visit.
Done where the boat is parked
You don't need to tow anywhere. Our vans carry their own water and power, so we detail on the trailer at storage yards, marinas, acreages and driveways across Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane, Okotoks and Rocky View County. If your storage yard has rules about on-site work, check with them first and we'll work around their hours.
Engine winterization, fuel stabilizer and draining water systems are mechanical jobs for you or your marine service shop. We handle the cleaning and protection side, so plan both before the first hard freeze.
Booking before it gets cold
Wax, sealant and coating products go on best in mild fall weather, so earlier is better. Marine work is priced per foot, with pontoon acid restoration priced per side. Current pricing for every service is listed on the marine detailing page, and we confirm the scope in writing after a walkaround.
Common questions
Can you detail my boat on its trailer at a storage yard?
Yes. Our vans carry their own water and power, so we work at most storage yards, marinas, acreages and driveways in the Calgary area. Check your yard's rules on on-site work first.
Do you winterize boat engines?
No. We handle the cleaning, polishing and protection. Engine and water system winterization should be done by you or a marine service shop.
Should I wax or polish before storage?
If the gelcoat is still glossy, a wash and wax is enough. If it looks chalky or faded, it needs a polish before it's sealed, or the protection goes on over oxidized gelcoat.
