Ceramic coating vs wax for Calgary winters

Wax sits on the paint for weeks. A ceramic coating bonds to it for years. How they compare against salt brine, mag chloride and car-wash brushes.

    What wax does well

Carnauba wax adds warmth and gloss and is easy to apply. It's also soft and sits on top of the paint, so detergents, road salt and heat wear it off in weeks. Through a Calgary winter, it's often gone after a few washes.

    Sealants: the middle ground

Synthetic sealants bond better than wax and last months rather than weeks. They're a good fit for a vehicle that gets detailed a few times a year and doesn't need long-term protection.

    Ceramic coatings: years, not months

A ceramic coating chemically bonds to the clear coat and forms a hard, slick layer. Salt brine and mag chloride rinse off instead of sitting on the paint, washing gets faster, and the gloss holds for years depending on the product tier.

It isn't armour. A coating won't stop rock chips; that's what paint protection film is for. And the paint should be corrected first, because a coating locks in whatever is underneath it.

    Which one to pick

Keeping the vehicle a year or two: a sealant on a regular schedule. Keeping it five years or longer, or it's new: a coating usually costs less per year than repeated sealants, and makes every winter wash easier.
